Each of e.g. five individual switch units (2-6) comprises a rotationally symmetrical cylinder with an anode (8) and a cathode (9) facing each other across a discharge chamber (10). The discharge (12) is triggered by a hollow control electrode (20) insulated electrically from the cathode (9). The chamber (10) and the space (19) within the hollow electrode (20) are filled with gas from a reservoir (24). The striking voltage falls as the prod. of the pressure and the length (d) of the discharge path between cathode (9) and anode (8) rises. ADVANTAGE - Construction is simplified and uniform pressure on all gas-discharge paths is guaranteed.
