Heading B5N A contoured multi-ply material comprises a sheet 13 of an elastic base material, and an overlying layer 24 of fabric secured by adhesive to the base material in selected areas whilst the base material was under stress, the overlying layer 24 of fabric being gathered in areas bounded by the selected areas upon relief of stress of the base material to form a contoured surface. In apparatus, Fig. 3, for making the material elastic base material 13, e.g. of an elastic plastics such as polyurethane foam or stretch nylon is fed between rollers 15, 16, the roller 16 applying to the material 13 over selected areas adhesive from a bath 20. The adhesive may be applied along diagonal lines 10, 11 (see Fig. 6) or form the outlines of rosettes or other ornamental figures. The material 13 then passes between a laminating roller 23 and a pressure roller 26, these two rollers having a peripheral speed greater than that of rollers 15, 16 so that the material 13 is stretched, preferably 5-10%, between the two pairs of rollers. The layer 24 of e.g. woven natural and synthetic material, is applied to the material 13 by the roller 26, and the multiply material so formed is fed by rollers 29-32 having the same peripheral speed as rollers 23, 26 to maintain the material 13 in a stretched state until the adhesive has dried. The stress on material 13 is then relieved to produce a fabric having gathered areas 12, Fig. 6, between the adhesive areas. To accelerate drying of the adhesive the rollers 29-32 may be heated, and, as shown the roller 23 is heated by radiant heaters 27 and the fabric is heated by a radiant heater 28. If desired the roller 23 is hollow and heated by passing steam through it. The apparatus may be modified to apply adhesive to both sides of the material 13 in which case an overlying layer of material is applied to each side, thus forming a 3-ply laminate having two contoured surfaces.</p> |
