Prepn. of optically active alcohol(s) and optically active ester(s) - by enantioselective acylation of racemic alcohol(s) with vinyl ester(s) of higher fatty acids in the presence of a lipase

The prepn. of optically active alcohols (I) and optically active fatty acid esters (I) comprises enantioselective acylation of racemates of alcohols with vinyl esters of 10-18C fatty acids in the presence of a lipase. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) and (II) are chiral auxiliary reagents, chiral intermediates, natural perfumes and insect pheromones. The process gives (I) and (II) in high optical yields by a simple method. Unlike previous processes using vinyl ethanoate as the acylating agent which gave prods. of very similar b.pts., (I) and (II) are easily sepd. without the need to use expensive chromatography and rectification.
