An orientation layer for liquid crystal displays that contains at least one compound containing as structural element a mediocyclic or macrocyclic carbon ring allows a clearly improved contrast to be obtained in displays and the like. The mediocyclic or macrocyclic structural elements may also contain heteroatoms such as O, N and S atoms.
