Monitoring system for press-fit quality - uses slope of force and displacement characteristic as figure of merit

A cylindrical element (11) is sized to provide an interference fit in a hole (14) in a plate. The element is inserted using a power press (15) and a force transducer (16) provides output to a processor (18). The press displacement is also measured (17) to allow a force versus displacement characteristic to be obtained. The stope of the force-displacement curve is obtained and is used to define a reference value that may be used to provide a means of quality control. ADVANTAGE - Allows quality of press fixt to be determined.
