Gasoline and diesel fuels contain minor amts. of: (a) an ethoxylated, propoxylated or butoxylated mono- or polyhydroxy cpd. with a no.-av. molecular wt. of 500-6000; and (b) an NTA or EDTA imide deriv. of formula (I): (where Q = CH2COX or CH2CH2N(CH2COX)2; X = NHR or X+X = NR; R = 7-18C aliphatic gps. (same or different)). Component (a) is specifically derived from an alcohol of formula R(OH)n, where n = 1-4 and R = 1-20C alkane, by reaction with butylene oxide or a combination of propylene oxide and butylene oxide in a ratio of 5:95 to 95:5. The (a):(b) wt. ratio is 5:1 to 1:3. The fuels contain 0.01-0.3 wt.% (a) + (b).
