The invention relates to a process for grinding and/or polishing optical components, in which the machining tool 11 is placed in contact with the surface of the workpiece 10 to be ground, whereafter the tool and the workpiece are set in motion one relative to the other. According to the invention, the compression force between the tool 11 and the optical workpiece 10 is achieved by the suction-induced generation of a vacuum between the tool and the workpiece, whereupon the external air pressure produces the necessary surface pressure. The tool 11 is divided into sections 12,13, the flutes 14,15 of which, which were made in the surfaces facing the optical workpiece 10, have been coupled to a vacuum pump 20 so that the grinding pressure in the different sections can be arranged independently of each other in order to have the required magnitude. <IMAGE>
