The escalator step has a tread plate with a strip fixed to one or both long edges. The strip (3) has one or more tongues (6, 7) extending along each longitudinal edge at the bottom. These are of parallelogram cross-section with identical angles of at least 110 deg., or alternatively, or trapezoidal section. They engage mating grooves (8, 9) in the plate. Locking pins (10) at intervals along the strip protrude from it at the bottom, gripped by clamping rings (11) on their free protruding ends below the plate and bearing against it at openings (12) in it. The dimensions of pins and openings are such as to allow unimpeded insertion of the tongues in the grooves.
