A transition piece for use in the fusion welding of steel to aluminous metal consists of a steel element 10 pressure bonded to a strong aluminium alloy element 11 through a deformable aluminous bonding element 12. Pressure bonding is performed by rolling, forging or explosive means. The bonding element 12 is of at least 99% aluminium, has a minimum thickness of 1À5 mm. and is reduced by at least 0À7 mm. in a single operation. The outer elements 25, 26, Fig. 4, may be of different size and may be lap-jointed. An 18/8 steel component and a component of an aluminium alloy containing 2À3-3À3% magnesium, 3À5-4À5% zinc, 0À1- 0À4% manganese and 0À15-0À25% Cr are belt sanded and roll-bonded using an aluminium bonding element. The resulting composite is cut up to form transition pieces. Articles 15, 16 of similar alloys are fusion welded to a transition piece, the steels being welded by arc or flame and the aluminium alloys being welded by inert gas shielded metal or tungsten arc. |
