PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL FIBER BASE MATERIAL

PURPOSE:To smoothly disconnect an optical fiber base material and to obtain the front end shape of a specified shape by controlling the tension at the time of disconnection to a specified value at the time of executing the leading of the base material before feeding the base material to a drawing stage. CONSTITUTION:For example, a small-sized camera or the like contg. a temp. sensor is usable as a temp. sensor 11. The image information and temp. information obtd. by this camera are inputted to an external controller 12 and are compared with the optimum temp. for disconnection which is previously set in the controller 12. An optimum timing moving mechanism 10 is driven to lower a lower frame 3 by the specified tension to disconnect the bottom end of the optical fiber base material 6 when the optimum temp. coincides with the actually measured temp. The leading at the bottom end of the optical fiber base material 6 is then executed and an oxyhydrogen burner 7 is retreated to a prescribed position by a traversing mechanism 8 when this leading is completed. The disconnection is smoothly executed in this way and the good leading shape is obtd. without fluctuations.
