A stretch-straightener 10 comprises a pair of opposed gripper head assemblies 14, 16, the gripper head assembly 16 being movable away from the other to stretch the workpiece and a gripper on at least one of the assemblies comprises a pair of juxtaposed converging surfaces 38, 40 (Fig. 4) to which are keyed tapered wear plates 42, 44 respectively on which are slidably mounted a second set of oppositely tapered wear plates 50, 52 secured to the gripper jaws 32, 34 respectively and means coupled to the jaws position the wear plates to provide different angles of approach for the jaws. The wear plates may also be reversed to alter the wedging angle. The gripper head assembly 16 has flanges 20 slidable along guides 24 (Fig. 3) provided with strips 26 to prevent canting. The grippers comprise a wide lower jaw 34 and a series of narrower upper jaws 32 actuated by individual actuators 58 mounted on the gripper head assembly through resilient damper links 62. The lower jaw 34 is moved by a pair of spaced actuators 68 acting through damper links 70. |
