The invention relates to a process for the preparation of N-L-alpha-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine (lower) alkyl esters, characterized in that novel 5-oxo-4-oxazolidineacetic acid derivatives of the formula I, where R1 is trimethylsilyl or hydrogen, are reacted with a lower alkyl ester of L-phenylalanine, and the protective group(s) is (are) removed in a known manner.
