The present invention relates to a method for continuously measuring the tension in a belt (1), consisting in picking up the vibrations of a strand of this belt using microphones, in measuring the natural frequency of these vibrations, characterised in that it consists in compensating for the damping of the oscillations by supplying energy without mechanical contact with the strand of the belt. A further subject of the invention is a measurement device allowing implementation of the method, this measurement device including a microphone fork (6) fitted with two microphones and an acoustic fork (7) fitted with two loudspeakers. Particular application to the measurement of the tension of a distribution belt of an internal combustion engine. <IMAGE>
