A floor covering is ceramic tiles on a layer which smoothes out irregularities of the floor and assists bonding. This layer consists of elastic material applied to the individual tiles when they are made and which is only weakly bonded or not at all to the floor beneath; the tiles (including their under-layer) are laid so as to allow them to move vertically about the joints between them. The elastic layer is preferably rubber granules.
