Particularly for use at the base of a scaffold upright (32), a support element (10) is provided which has a substantially planar upper surface region (12) delimited by upstanding retainer means in the form of a skirt portion (14), which preferably surrounds the upper surface region (12), and which has a hollow underside. The upper surface region (12) is dimensioned to receive a scaffold base plate (30) and the skirt portion (14) prevents its dislodgement. The hollow underside of the latter facilitates stacking of elements. One or more recesses or raised sections (27) are preferably provided in the outer edge of the skirt portion (14) to facilitate lifting of the element.
