Accident warning system on highways with crash barriers - incorporates flashing lamps on nearside of carriageway, triggered by direction on any impact causing barrier deformation

The outer edges of a dual carriageway and the central reservation are equipped with crash barriers (5) carrying outside eyelets (8) through which steel cables (7) are threaded in sections having fixed ends and midway detectors (10). These are triggered by deformation of the associated barriers (5) and cause hazard warning lamps to flash in the appropriate direction towards oncoming traffic, along a stretch of about 3 to 5 km, on the approach to the site of barrier deformation. ADVANTAGE - Timely warning is given automatically and at low cost, to vehicles nearing scene of accident.
