Winding-in procedure for towed sonar on ship's deck - using stern roller in recess to provide vertical axis for rotation and save space in superstructure

The towed sonar (160) is wound on a drum about a vertical w.r.t. the deck (105) of the ship. Space can be saved by wrapping the sonar around a gun turret (110) or its foundation. Tension relief can be provided by rollers (180), e.g. drive and matching pairs. The axis of rotation (111) of the drum (155) is vertical w.r.t. the deck. When wound round a cannon, navigation equipment or crane to save deck space it does not affect the movement and viewing conditions. The drum can be installed below deck (105), a passageway opening being provided for the sonar. ADVANTAGE - Space saving, esp. for smaller marine vessels. Reduction of deck loading.
