Many percarboxylic acids demonstrate effective disinfection and bleaching properties, especially at hand-hot temperatures, but their use in household formulations is precluded by virtue of their adverse physico-chemical properties, such as a propensity to decompose too quickly during storage or to explode on impact or when subjected to pressure. The invention provides a selection of organic percarboxylic acids which are not only stable and safe, but show especially effective bleach properties. They satisfy general formula (I), in which X represents hydrogen or optionally a compatible non-released substituent, Y represents a group of formula (CH2)zH, x, y and z are either 0, 1 or 2, and x + y + z = 1 or 2, and Ph represents a phenyl substituent, optionally substituted by a compatible non-released substituent. In a preferred peroxyacid, X=H, x=0, y=1, z=0 and Ph is unsubstituted. The invention also provides bleaching, washing and disinfecting compositions containing such peracids and processes using them for such purposes. The invention further provides a process for making peroxyacids in a sulphuric acid reaction medium in which in step 1, a medium having a preselected acidity is formed by mixing sulphuric acid with aqueous hydrogen peroxide, in step 2, a solution of carboxylic acid in concentrated sulphuric acid is formed and in step 3, the product of step 2 is introduced progressively into the sulphuric acid reaction medium and an aqueous diluent is separately introduced into the medium in order to maintain the acidity of the mixture substantially constant. |
