Known optical amplifiers used in a light transmission path to amplify the light signal being transmitted have the disadvantage that the semiconductor lasers used in them as pumped lasers are very sensitive to feedback effects. According to the invention, the operating current of a pumped laser (4) of this type is modulated at a high frequency, whereby the pumped laser has multimode operation and thus is insensitive to feedback effects. The operating current may, for example, be a direct current on which an alternating current is superimposed. If the optical amplifier has two pumped lasers, the operating current is also modulated. The two pumped lasers are then advantageously simply switched on and off alternately at a sufficiently high switching frequency, thereby also enabling mutual interference to be avoided. |
