In a diagnostic device for detecting defective combustion in an internal combustion engine there is a characteristic mapping in which characteristics depending on the load and revolution speed are stored. Depending on the characteristic concerned, one or more different diagnostic procedures are performed which provide the most reliable information possible concerning defective combustion.
