In a fuel injection pump wherein a piston 1 reciprocates within a cylinder to deliver fuel from a working chamber 9 and an axially displaceable control sleeve 2 co-operates with a control slot 3 in the piston to control the spillage of fuel from the working chamber, the control sleeve is provided with a recess 7 at its end remote from the working chamber. During the inward stroke of the piston the recess interacts with a control edge 8 of the slot 3 to form a throttled flow path for spilled fuel such that the commencement of injection is advanced with increasing speed. The throttling action is said to give a rate of fuel injection in dependence upon speed and load. A profiled control edge (71, Fig. 2) is formed at the junction of the recess with the bore. Various geometries may be applied to the lower edge of the control slot 3 in order to vary the throttling effect. <IMAGE>
