A sorbent system, which is of use in both gas and liquid chromatography, and which exhibits an overall partition coefficient with respect to the gaseous or liquid mixture to be separated which is constant over a finite range of temperature, comprises a weighted combination of two sorbents selected so that the temperature-dependent adsorption or solution characteristics of the one are balanced by those of the other over the range of temperature in question. Columns containing the sorbent system may consist of the two sorbents in series, in striated bands along the column, or in intimate mixtures. Alternatively, the first sorbent may provide a support for the second sorbent. An experimental method is detailed by means of which the proportion of sorbents in the weighted combination may be determined. In an example, various columns comprising sorbents weighted amounts of squalane and a mixture of methyl stearate and n-octadecanol supported on firebrick were employed using benzene and acetone as test vapours to determine characteristics and then to separate mixtures of air, isopentane, npentane, acetone and benzene. |
