1,093,154. Moulding steering wheels. SOC. ANON. ANDRE CITROEN. Nov. 26, 1965 [Dec. 10, 1964], No. 50269/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B7] A method of forming a dished, hollow steering wheel of polycarbonate resin comprises moulding upper and lower halves 1a, 2a, respectively, of the wheel when divided in a plane perpendicular to the turning axis thereof. Each half has two spokes 1b, 2b meeting at a central section 1c which is attached to a steering column. Resistance wires 3 enter the section 1c and pass down the spokes and around opposed semi-circular grooves (1e), (2e) in mating surfaces (1d), (2d) of each half, the half 1a having a locating flange (1f). A current is passed through the wires, thereby locally melting and thermally welding the resin. The wires are then cut off. In modifications the wheel halves are located by reentrant portions (Fig. 4) or nipples (2g) and projections (1g), (Fig. 5) and are moulded together by adhesive, resin softeners, or highfrequency electrical energy. In a further modification the upper half 1a is provided with an integral cross-piece (1h), a downward extension thereof locating in a recess (1i) in the lower part, the extension then being expanded by riveting, while the mating surfaces (1d), (2d) are secured together as described above. |
