PURPOSE:To obtain an alcohol by catalytic reduction with hydrogen in the presence of an ester reductive catalyst using a triglyceride or fatty acid ester as raw material with its S compound concentration reduced by treatment, in advance, with a copper-contg. catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective alcohol can be obtained by catalytic reduction with hydrogen in the presence of an ester reductive catalyst (e.g. copper- chromium-based one) using a triglyceride or fatty acid ester as raw material. The raw material has been treated with a catalyst of the formula (X is Fe, Cr or Zn; Y is Al, Si or Ti; x=0.02-2.4; y=0-2.0) to decrease its sulfur content to <=0.6ppm, leading to longer activity life for the ester reductive catalyst. In treating the raw material with the catalyst of the formula, the reaction is made at the treatment pressure of 20-500kg/cm<2> so as to come to <=180 KOHmg/g in the saponification value of the treated oil to be obtained. The reaction time can be shortened compared to the case with using untreated raw material. |
