A method of making an animal resistant to an infectious virus, or other pathogenic microorganism to which the animal is susceptible comprises inoculating the animal with a live heterotypic virus or other microorganism immunologically unrelated to the infections virus or other pathogenic microorganism, said heterotypic microorganism being alien to said animal i.e. produces no sign of illness in the animal and being characterised by its ability to develop complement-fixing antibodies in the animal against the pathogenic microorganism. Thus, live human adenovirus protects dogs against infectious canine hepatitis virus; live bovine virus diarrhea virus protects pigs against hog cholera virus; live bovine rhinotracheitis protects horses against infections equine rhinopneumonitis; live mink enteritis protects cats against feline panleukopenia; live Miyagawanella bovis virus protects cats against infections Miyaga-wanella felis; live Leptospira pomona protects dogs against Leptospira canicola; live hog cholera virus protects cows against infectious diarrhea virus; and live measles virus protects dogs against canine distemper virus. |
