[Also in Division H1] The invention relates to a power distribution system for electric traction systems in which D.C. operated vehicles are supplied with D.C. from a number of semi-conductor rectifying substations along the route. According to the invention these sub-stations contain step-down transformers, rectifiers and protective gear and are mounted on poles. Preferably the distribution of sub-stations is related to the traffic density so that each sub-station supplies one vehicle. Fig. 1 shows the circuit of one substation. The three-phase transformer 31 is supplied from the mains 10, 11, 12 through tap changing gear 28, 29, 30. The rectifiers 32 to 37, which are shown as single elements, are series parallel combinations of semi-conductor rectifying elements. There is a tuned smoothing arrangement 38, 39 on the D.C. side together with an overload circuit-breaker 40, 41. One of the output leads 24 is earthed, the other, 44, passes through a high voltage bushing in the tank 22 containing the sub-station. On the input side there are fuses 13, 14, 15 and spark gaps 16, 17, 18 and varistors 19, 20, 21 to divert lightning surges. The mechanical arrangement of the sub-station is also described (Figs. 2, 3 and 4, not shown).
