A method for preparing alkenyl succinic anhydride useful as a sizing agent comprises (a) isomerization of -olein by use of a mixt. catalyst which containing a lewis acid to obtain internal olefin, and (b) ene-reaction of the obtd. internal olefin with maleic anhydride. The Lewis acid is selected from aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide, aluminium fluoride, iron chloride, tungsten chloride, zinc chloride, tin chloride, gallium chloride, diethyl aluminium chloride or diethyl aluminium chloride. Pref. the mixt. catalyst contains 20-60 wt.% of a lewis acid.
