The appts. tests a multiplexer separating an input string into 2k outputs. A test pulse string generator and a pulse error measuring device, using the generator clock frequency divided down to 1/2k, generate a same pattern first 2k-1 bit period M-sequence and respectively shift it m-bits and p-bits to obtain a second M-sequence. Test and reference pulse strings of the desired mark ratio are logically derived from the respective M-sequence pairs. A mismatch detector compares reference and demultiplexer output strings on a bitwise basis to satisfy p = (m+v(2N-1))/2k, where m, p, k, N are positive integers and V is a desired integer.
