The binoculars pref. contain an optical system (1) with at least one objective lens and eyepiece. To reduce the jitter motion transferred from the hand to the optical system, at least one compensator (7) is coupled to the optical system which imparts compensating motion to the optical system. The compensator is controlled by at least one sensor (5), connected to the optical system, which responds to at least one rotary component of the jitter motion perpendicular to the direction (11) of observation.
