In an electrical filter for cleaning a particle-laden gas flow, gas pipes function as deposite electrodes with an axially-arranged spray electrode in each pipe, with pipes formed by sheet metal panels arranged in parallel and sepd. by flat spacers to give each pipe a regular polygonal cross-section inlet and an octagonal outlet. The novelty is that the pipe inlet is square and that the outlet is octagonal and superimposed upon the square inlet. A suitable arrangement incorporates a pipe (1) assembly with square inlets (E) and an octagonal outlet (A) with four opposite sides in line with the inlet (E). The pipe faces (4,11,12) are of roughly equal length. The pipe sides and corner-members are of equal length. The metal panels and spray electrodes are longer than are the corner members in the direction of gas flow, so the electro-filter formed by the tubes is effectively preceded by a plate electro filter. There is a gradual transition in the pipe cross-section between the inlet and the outlet. The transition begins after one third of the distance from the inlet. USE/ADVANTAGE - The arrangement provides for an efficient filter of short length requiring less materials and providing cost savings.
