PURPOSE:To precisely correct the detection error of a distance sensor by extending a determined area when no road data is present in the determined area, and retrieving the road data in the extended area first according the generating tendency of error generation. CONSTITUTION:In a vehicle position detecting device 1, when an operation part 4 is operated, the present position B1 of a vehicle provided with the device 1 is detected by direction and distance sensors 6, 7, and the present vehicle position data is stored in the memory M of a position detecting unit 2. The road data is retrieved in a determined area F1 with the position B1 as the center, and when a road data R2 is present therein, map matching processing is conducted. When no road data is not found by retrieving the determined area F2 of a detected present vehicle position F3, however, the retrieving area is moved in the vehicle direction by a determined distance (a determined radius (r)), and the road data in an area F3 or area F4 is retrieved. When a road data R1 is retrieved in the area F4, for example, the memory data in a flag memory part M1 is renewed, a present vehicle position B6 is displayed on a map on a screen 8 by map matching processing. |
