The air compressor is for use with a vehicle wheel having one or more pneumatic tyres. It has a first component (37) forming a pump chamber (36), and in which a second component (35) works. A passage connects the chamber to the tyre. Relative movement between the components is generated by fixing one to the wheel or its hub (28), and the other to a component (32) not rotating with the wheel. The latter component consists of a weight turning on an axis (33) coaxial with the hub and round the latter, its centre of gravity being offset in the radial direction from this axis.
