The data control on a sewing machine enables embroidery stitches to be made. The cloth progress mechanism on the sewing table enables it to be moved back-and-forward or from side-to-side. Motors drive the mechanism and are controlled from a programme through electronic devices. The preset programme can be modified using a modification routine. A computer with keyboard and screen has an additional memory, or data storage unit. The stitch programme from a previous programme is selected, and reproduced on the screen (36). The operator employs a mouse (arrow) to draw a straight line (54) along the top of the existing stitches shown on the screen. ADVANTAGE - The preset programme may be examined on the display. The programme is modified in a manner which is simple, rather than assemble a completely new programme.
