Safety system for motorways - with detectors for vehicles travelling in wrong direction and with immobilising control for those vehicles

The motorway is fitted with roadside detectors for vehicle travelling in the wrong direction. A transmission link to those vehicles enables the safety system to take over from the driver. This operates acoustic/optic alarms, and after a time delay immobilises the vehicle. The automatic operation of the hazard flashers warns other road users of the danger. The detectors can be fitted at access points to the motorway, and in known danger spots. The progressive immobilisation of the vehicle enables the driver to steer the vehicle off the road. An additional warning system can be a transmitted warning which is picked up by other vehicles in a known radius e.g. via the car radio warning system.
