The low-temperature expansion equipment (122) cools a heat-generating component(104), having a housing (102) containint a pressure vessel (144). A regenerated in the latter directs gas through a large number of heat-transfer components(154), while a reciprocating component(124) in the vessel thrusts the gas from a first chamber(158) into a second one, being actuated by a drive mechanism (172). During its movement, gas yields up heat previously received from the vessel end wall(140) to the heat-transfer component. The drive mechanism is fixed in position in the housing. The reciprocating component can be a positive-displacement piston, and can contain a gas-spring chamber. ADVANTAGE - Reduces mechanical vibration.
