Comparison (5,6,7,8) of the velocity signals obtained from each of the vehicle wheels is used to obtain the difference in the velocities (delta V) from diagonally opposing wheel pairs and the variation rate (dV/dt) of the obtained difference signals. A cornering signal is supplied when at least one of these signals is above a given threshold value. Pref. the wheel velocity sensors (VL, VR, HL, HR) are common to the cornering signal generator and the anti-locking vehicle braking system. The signal provided by the generator is pref. used as a function verification signal for a transverse acceleration sensor.
