A machine for filling a cartridge (14) with a viscous or paste-like substance has a filler valve (28) embodied in a cylindrical housing. The cartridge is brought the filling station by a transport device (15) and then aligned with the filler valve (28) by power cylinders (35). The cartridge is then gripped by a vacuum actuated holder (38) which then moves the cartridge axially over the filler valve (28). The gripping surface of the holder (38) is shaped to match the surface (44) of the cartridge (14), both surfaces being of cylindrical form.
