Prepn.. of phosphorothioates or phosphates of formulae RO-(P=Z)(OR1)2 (I), RO-P(=Z)(R1)(OR1) (II) or (III) comprises reacting under alkaline conditions substantially equimolar amts. of a cpd. of (a) formula (IV) or (V) with a cpd. (b) of formula Cl-P(=Z)(OR1)2 (VI) or Cl-P(=Z)(R1)(OR1) (VII) in the presence of an aq. solvent system and in the presence of a nonionic surfactant having a HLB value of 1-20 and a catalytic amt. of a tert. amine. R = (VIII)-(XI); R1 = 1-6C alkyl, phenyl or pyridyl; X = Br, Cl, F, I, CN, NO2, 1-6C(alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or alkylsulphinyl) or NR2R3; R2,R3 = H or 1-6C alkyl; n = 0, 1, 2 or 3; when n is more than 1, all substits are sterically compatible with each other; Zn = O or S; M = alkali or alkaline earth metal.
