Prepn. of 2-chloropropion aldehydeacetal derivs. of formulae (I) or (II) comprises: reacting sulphuryl chloride and propionaldehyde at 0-100 deg.C then with ROH or R'CH(OH)-CH(OH)R' at 0 deg.C - b.pt. R = 1-6C alkyl; R1 = H or 1-6C alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - The cpds. and the free 2-chloropropionaldehyde are intermediates in organic syntheses for e.g. amino thiazoles used as chemicals, agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. The process give the prods. in high yield and greater selectivity.
