The faulty components in a system, contg. a number of components, at least some of which generate fault codes when defined states occur, are isolated by identifying the codes, which components have generated them, identifying a loop, or series circuit contg. components which have generated codes, defining and executing tests on suspected components. If the faulty component has not been identified after completion of the tests, all suspected components are eliminated and further tests are defined until the faulty component is identified and can be repaired or replaced.
