<p>A locking differential includes a case 11 which is rotatably driven by a power source. A cross shaft 17 is mounted within the case 11 for rotation therewith. A pair of pinion gears 18 are rotatably mounted on the ends of the cross shaft 17. The pinion gears 18 mesh with side gears 13, 14 splined onto respect axle shafts 15, 16. Thus, when the case 11 is rotated, torque is transmitted through the cross shaft 17, the pinion gears 18, and the side gears 13, 14 to the axle shafts 15, 16. A locking collar 20 is journalled on one (13) of the side gears for axial movement between locked and unlocked positions. In the locked position, the locking collar 20 is connected to the side gear 13 for rotation therewith. In the unlocked position, the side gear 13 is free to rotate relative to the locking collar 20. The locking collar 20 is connected to a shifting collar 21 by a plurality of spoke portions 21b which extend through respective slots 11b formed through the case 11. Bearing means 23 are provided in each of the slots 11b for engaging and guiding the axial movement of the shifting and locking collars 20, 21. <IMAGE></p> |
