[Also in Division F2] In a method of making a washer a depression is formed in a piece of sheet metal 28 to define a cupshaped central portion 40 surrounded by a flatter annular portion 42, the cupped part 40 is sheared out to leave the annular portion with a cylindrical hole 26 the axial length of which is greater than the thickness of the sheet, and the annular portion is then partially flattened so that the wall of the hole 26 becomes frusto-conical. The washer is assembled to a nut 12 which has a projecting skirt 18 and the skirt is compressed axially and swaged outwards to trap the washer. The wall thickness of the skirt is initially tapered, but due to the swaging becomes of uniform thickness. |
