Active EC-SOD is produced by subjecting insoluble, inactive aggregates containing recombinant EC-SOD produced by transformed bacteria or the like to (a) a step for treating said inactive forms of recombinant foreign proteins containing EC-SOD in a chaotropic conditions under reducing conditions or in combination of the two, and forming and recovering a solubilized monomeric EC-SOD, (b) a step for refolding said monomer into an active EC-SOD under a refolding condition, and (c) a step for purifying the refolded active EC-SOD. The EC-SOD is useful as an anti-inflammatory agent or a medical for protecting Behcet disease, myocardiac infraction, radiation disorders or the like. <IMAGE> <IMAGE>
