A process for producing stainless steel (i.e. an iron base alloy containing at least 4% Cr) comprises forming a bath of steel containing carbon and chromium in a first vessel, oxidatively refining the melt to form a slag containing chromium oxides, pouring the slag into a second vessel where it is treated with a reducing agent and returning the metal rich in chromium and the spent slag to the first vessel. The refining may be accomplished by oxygen blown vertically downwards through the slag on to the surface of the melt, and the reducing agent may be Fe-Si of Fe-Cr-Si.
