The apparatus includes a display section (1) for displaying the check result of the illumination of an optical source (4). A processor (2) supplies reference level signals to an optical level detector (7) to display any abnormality in the illumination of the optical source (4). The optical level detector (7) receives optical levels through a charge coupled device (6) after the optical beams are reflected from a text paper (5), and then, the optical level detector (7) compares the optical levels with a reference level to discriminate any abnormality in the illumination of the optical source (4). With the apparatus, an abnormality in the illumination of the optical source can be easily detected.
