The invention relates to a device making it possible to keep the ashtray of a motor vehicle in a permanent state of cleanliness, by removing the waste contained in the ashtray and, by consequence, the fumes (smoke) and odours which are unpleasant for the users. Cleaning is carried out by sucking the waste from the ashtray by means of a nozzle (2), transferring this waste through a hose (5) to a tank (3) located in the engine compartment of the vehicle. Sucking is brought about by means of a fan (4) powered by the energy of the engine (12) via belts and pulleys. The tank (3) has a braided metal basket (6) intended to be emptied and cleaned when the vehicle is having a periodic service. <IMAGE>
