A luminance value (Y) is determined for every pixel in the raster, while chrominance values (V, U) are determined only for every Nth pixel. A single address generator is used for storing the luminance and chrominance values for at least two values of N. The address generator (3) provides consecutive addresses for storage of the luminance value (Y) in a memory (4). The two chrominance values (V, U) are stored in a second memory (5) under the Nth address and the address following the Nth. Invalid data are written into the N-2 intermediate addresses. A register (11) and a multiplexer (13) are used to switch from one value of N to the next. ADVANTAGE - Can operate in 4:2:2 or 3:1:1 systems using common address generator.
