Prepn. of N,N'-bis-tri:methyl:silyl-urea - by reaction of urea with hexa:methyl:di:silazane in presence of water

Prepn. of N,N'-bis-trimethylsilyl-urea (I) comprises reaction of urea with hexamethyldisilazane (II) in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g. a cation exchanger) opt. with introduction of a carrier gas and with addn. of moisture. The water content in the reaction mixt. over the entire reaction is 0.001-2 wt.%. The water content is 0.01-0.5 wt.% and the water is added to the mixt. via the reaction partners, the catalyst and/or the carrier gas. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful, e.g. as a starting material in polymer chemistry and in the prodn. of penicillin. The process gives high yields in short reaction times without exclusion of moisture. Sepn. of prod. from the catalyst is simple.
