The sand-blasting facade etc cleaner has a blasting nozzle, supplied by hose from a compressor, mounted on a working platform moved by hoist, or on a frame installed near the facade, from which it is controlled. The nozzle (10) is enclosed by a protective cowl (14) with a peripheral seal (22), abutting against the surface to be cleaned. Thus it encloses a dirt-collecting and settling chamber (20). Extraction ports or slots (28) inside the chamber generate a suction past the seal and form a vacuum curtain acting as an additional seal from the outside. The ports are in extraction passages, pref formed in support struts etc (24) for the cowl, which are connected via a manifold (36) in the cowl and a hose to an exhauster at ground level.
