Material such as waste paper, packing material, plastics etc. is compressed inside a cylindrical hopper (1). A frame, consisting of an upright (2) and horizontal (4) which overhangs the hopper, supports a vertical shaft (5). The vertical shaft can be moved vertically by a rack (10) and pinion (11) mechanism.The lower end of the shaft (5) supports a radial arm (6) which carries a roller (7). This roller compresses the material (12) by its own weight. A motor inside the roller (7) is supplied with power through a cable (13) and rotates the roller about the arm (6) so that it rolls in a circle over the material (12)
